Natasha Powell has always been adamant about being an advocate for her fellow peers, especially for the marginalized groups. Last semester, Powell was recently voted SGA President. During her campaign her mission statement was, “Ignite Passion, Inspire Purpose”, when interviewed, Powell explained how she plans to execute said statement.
During her time as president, Natasha plans to be a voice for those who are underrepresented at DSC. “My desire is to bring optimism and hope to those who feel marginalized,” she said. “I hope to help other students realize their potential and inspire them to pursue their passions.”
Melissa Castorino, the Student Life Coordinator and SGA Advisor, is heavily involved in the organization. Whether attending conferences or planning student life events, she dedicates much time to Student Government. She strongly believes it is a great opportunity for students to gain experience and network.
“We try to encourage networking opportunities for students on and off campus”, she said
Daytona State’s Student Government Association is an organization that facilitates close working relationships between students and faculty in creating policies for Daytona State College. Also, the association plays a vital role in contributing to many community service projects not only on campus but throughout Flagler and Volusia County Daytona State College.
Powell explains the reason she decided to run for President is because she hopes to improve the school environment and leave a positive impact on her fellow classmates. “I believe in the power of student voices and want to ensure that everyone’s opinions are heard and considered,” she said. Also, Powell hopes to help students reach their potential and live their lives with a purpose.
According to Castorino, Powell always exuded confidence and maintained a level of professionalism. “During group projects and community service, she is always very diplomatic, hearing what others have to say and accommodating those sentiments when making decisions”, she said.
Moreover, Powell believes some essential skills for a president include effective communication, accountability, and a strong sense of leadership. “They should be empathetic, approachable, and able to work collaboratively with others,” she said.
“Natasha is compassionate. She really cares about others, which is a very good quality. You need to have that to connect with members and faculty of the Student Body”, said Castorino.
Plus, she feels it is important for a president to be creative, and when decisions are made, they should reflect what is best for the student body. One of her main goals for SGA during her Presidency is to get more students involved on campus. She plans to do so by creating regular conferences where clubs can congregate, and student representatives can voice their concerns and plans.
“I hope to see SGA become a place where smaller clubs can be heard and promoted,” she said. “Through better publicizing club events and meetings, we can combine efforts and goal to create a more united campus.”
The reason Powell strongly encourages student participation on campus is because she believes there are many opportunities to develop important skills and network with other people. “Student government members have a chance to make meaningful contributions to their school, represent their peers, and influence school policies and initiatives,” she said.
