The Studio Arts department expanded throughout the spring semester by adding new courses and seeking on and off-campus opportunities for all art students.
One of these ventures is a collaborative pilot with Graphic Design Studio (GRA 1543), a class offered in the Digital & Interactive Media Production program, teaming up with Design 1 & Lab (ART1201C).
The pilot class, led by Professor Reynolds and Professor Brad Moody, is the first joint class for Studio Arts and DIMP. “We are trying to revive the print-making lab since it’s been dead for some time,” said Reynolds.
Students in both classes work together to create screen prints that can be placed on physical items such as graphics for posters or t-shirts.
“I’ve enjoyed trying something new by using professional-grade software to create our designs,” stated Lauren Lewis, a student in Graphic Design Studio.
“If this pilot goes well, we are putting in a proposal to have eight different print-making stations,” said Reynolds.
As of right now, there is no Studio Arts program offered at Daytona State College. Stacey Fletcher Reynolds, an art and drawing professor in the Studio Arts building, is attempting to move forward to build an official art program.
While many art classes are offered as electives, students need to apply for an Associate of Arts degree to take those courses. With an official Studio Arts program, students can fully participate in all art courses.
Many events have happened and will happen for Studio Arts students, like the Daytona State Student Competition, where students could submit their work to be displayed at the News Journal Center.
Studio Arts students are also displaying work at The Hub on Canal, an art gallery located in New Smyrna Beach.
The event, “Emerging: A Mix of Local & Promising Talent,” will display many Studio Arts students’ artwork from May 4th-27th.
Many opportunities are opening more eyes to the Studio Arts building as student engagement in these courses steadily improves.
