After listening to this record, I have to say, I am very impressed. For starters, David’s production combined with WiZzo’s rapping is an underrated combo. These two in the studio make heat. The intro track, “Premonition,” starts the record off with WiZzo spitting bar after bar over a barebones beat. WiZzo’s rapping steals the show. Unlike most rappers where the beat carries them, WiZzo carries the beat.
There is an immense improvement to WiZzo’s wordplay from “Dimensions Tape.” My favorite song on this album, “Thanos,” has WiZzo bringing out his inner Drake. WiZzo spits fast paced, slick bars over a bumping instrumental exclusively produced by David, also known as David Luis on Spotify. David’s production is smooth. The beat seems to glide through your ears as you listen, while seamlessly getting you pumped up.
As the record goes on, WiZzo tests new melodies. He’s not solely rapping melodically. However, he is testing his vocal range. The song “Monarch” shows WiZzo’s melody. I wish he did more of this style of rapping because he has the voice. The vocal sample at the beginning of the beat is very nice as well. David does an amazing job incorporating guitars and soft bass passages for WiZzo to show his true vocal strengths.
Towards the middle of the album, WiZzo features Nejay & Kendoo on the remix of the song “Big Thingz.” WiZzo’s rapping transitions into a smoother direction. Nejay & Kendoo contrast WiZzo’s more animated sound.
“IDCYD” has WiZzo rapping over an instrumental in the style of famed trap producer Pi’erre Bourne. This instrumental is the weirdest on the record. The song sounds like a distorted version of what Pi’erre Bourne did on “Life of Pierre Four.” Either way, WiZzo once again raps perfectly over this song. WiZzo’s delivery, while slower, still packs a punch.
“Superstar” is the certified hit from this album. WiZzo slides over this Kid Cudi style of beat. I can hear Cudi humming over this instrumental.
WiZzo dared to craft a Daft Punk remix. Combining underground hip hop and classic EDM is the level WiZzo is on. “Around The World” has WiZzo autotune singing over a spacey instrumental. There is nothing that sounds like this song that I’ve heard from any other underground artist. This song is the most professionally produced track on the album.
The final track “Intersoul Freestyle” shows WiZzo’s freestyling ability. The bar, “Dreams from my premonition, loading up the bars like its ammunition, cause it’ll soon be a little whole turning point like the world spinnin’” is my favorite line from the project.
I didn’t expect there to be many different sounds on this album. Overall, I have nothing overtly negative to say about this record. However, some of the melodies don’t work as well as I believe WiZzo wanted them to. For instance, on the song “In the Vibe” featuring HARV, WiZzo’s melody comes off very nasally, he sounds like he’s congested, and his singing is very offbeat. This is no offense to HARV; however, I wish he gave more to the track as well.
With every great rapper comes great projects. Each project builds on the next with better pieces of work than the last. While I feel WiZzo can do more lyrically, this project is still better than “Dimensions Tape,” and I hope WiZzo’s next project is even better. With that said, so far “Premonition” is WiZzo’s best project in his discography. WiZzo shows his grand ability to rap over any style of production while also pushing his vocals to the test. While some of WiZzo’s word play is repetitive at times, and some of his melodies could use tweaking, I do believe this project shows WiZzo’s talent. Give this project a listen if you’re into trap rap, underground hip hop, and underground hip hop production.
