As we near the dog days of summer and Daytona becomes a sweltering inferno, it’s nice to kick back in the great, air-conditioned indoors and enjoy a movie. When asked for their idea of the perfect summer movie, these Daytona State students raved on about their favorite films that complement a hot, summer day. Hopefully, their responses will give you an idea of what to tune into during the next heatwave!
Name: Alyssa Gregory

Campus: New Smyrna Beach
Gregory cites chick flicks as being her summertime movie fare. When asked what her favorite summer film is, she notes that the 1995 cult classic, Clueless, is a “fun watch.”

Campus: New Smyrna Beach
Howard-Hutton says that “you can’t go wrong” with the 2007 animated movie, Surf’s Up. He says that the film has “summertime vibes all around” because it is upbeat and has positive messages.

Campus: Daytona Beach
Samuels’ favorite summer movie is the 2004 tearjerker, The Notebook. She describes the movie as being “top tier” and as having the “perfect vibe” for summer because it initially takes place during summertime, depicting a teenage romance that eventually grows and lasts throughout the two main characters’ lifetime together.

Major: Creative Writing

Sheavly says that her favorite summer movie is the 1977 sci-fi classic, Star Wars. When asked why, she says that a lot of things appeal to her about the Star Wars movies. Namely, she likes that the Jedi Knights fight for freedom and righteousness, and that themes like this are what make for her favorite types of movies.

Sulzer believes that Disney movies are best for summertime, and considers 1991’s Beauty and the Beast to be her favorite summertime flick. She describes that it is a good film to put on and listen to in the background, and that it reminds her of her childhood.
