Last year, In Motion talked with the college’s
Vice President of the DSC Foundation, Tim Norton, on some vague yet helpful
thoughts and ideas regarding the new dorms being built on campus. A full year
later, concrete has been poured and the steel beams have been erected. This
monumental achievement for the college is aimed to be completed around the end
of the summer semester 2022.
The design of the dorms had been ongoing for
several years. This includes the creation of a Pro Forma from an outside firm
in 2018. “A Pro Forma is a way of presenting a detailed plan for such a project
in such a way as to assist decision makers in making an educated guess about
the viability of such a project,” explained Norton.
When asked about the possible upswing the dorms
would provide for the campus, he said, “We envision a vital, vibrant campus
that will change for the better with students living, studying, working and
playing on our Daytona Beach campus.” Norton also mentioned on August 26, 2021,
out of the 125 inquiries from potential students, more than 20 of those live in
Texas, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Virginia.
According to Norton, no name has been selected for
the new building, but “I’m hopeful that an interested friend/donor of Daytona
State College will step forward and say, ‘I’d love to support students with a
gift that will support scholarships for students needing affordable housing at
the College.’”
Will Dunne, Interim Dean for the School of Health
and Wellness, sees this as a “win for our Intercollegiate Athletics.” He said,
“It meshes the student housing facility proximate to their on-campus
activities, e.g., classes, student support services, dining hall, athletic
facilities, etc.”
Unfortunately, there is some bad news for football
fans out there. Dunne informed it will take a lot more than new dorms for the
College to obtain a football team, saying “At this time, it is unlikely that
football will become a sanctioned sport
at the state college level in Florida. There is current legislative language
that prevents us from sponsoring intercollegiate football in Florida.” Even
though this comes off as a bummer to some, there is no doubt this will help out
the athletics’ department tremendously.
