Upon calling Daytona State College’s phone number, someone might hear the holding message claim that the average age of a Daytona State student is 27 years old. Apart from age, what is the “average” DSC student like? The college has an abundance of degrees and certificates to choose from, so one can assume the diversity on campus is significant. At Daytona State, there is no “average.” Every student has a story, and all are worth reading.
Christian Pastrana, a 19-year-old enrolled at DSC through a cross country scholarship, explains how, “As a student athlete, the routine of getting up every day and working towards my athletic goals has made me a better version of myself in all areas.” Being active on campus, even if it’s joining a club or attending events, is a fantastic way to connect with fellow students and understand who DSC’s student body is composed of. Surrounding yourself with new people can lead to great experiences and self-growth. Athletics is just one factor that enables DSC’s diverse population. Even international students participate in DSC’s sports. Like Sandra Acheampong, an outside hitter and middle blocker on the DSC Women’s volleyball team, who moved here from Sweden and is originally from Ghana. You never know who you may meet on campus, or online, and what unique things they can teach you.
Daytona State College’s student body includes a variety of hardworking individuals. Whether you are just starting out, returning to school, or just desiring to take some classes, DSC has a place for you. Amy Finney, a 43-year-old mother of four, says, “DSC has provided me the flexibility to attend school even with my busy schedule. Working full time, I have chosen to do a mixture of online and in person classes, accelerated courses and full semester courses. The professors have been amazing to work with and I’ve met some great people during my time here. I really enjoy going to DSC.” Along with being a mother and full-time worker, Amy is also a two-time breast cancer survivor, volunteering to help women who are in her past position. Much like the students enrolled, DSC is flexible and understanding.
There is not one definition for every student on campus; we are all somebody, with something inspiring to share. You’re here for your reason, keep motivating yourself and others around you. You and your story are unique, and Daytona State College embraces that.
